Got insurance? Dog bite claims total $9.4 million in Tennessee last year

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) - The Insurance Information Institute says Tennessee topped more than 300 dog bite claims in 2016 totaling $9.4 million.
Nationwide, dog bites and other dog-related injuries were responsible for over one-third of all liability claims from homeowners in 2016. The total cost of claims was in excess of $600 million.
The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance (TDCI) is encouraging residents to make sure their insurance policies have the proper coverage in case their pet is involved in a situation. TDCI says June is especially dangerous for postal carriers, accounting for 13 percent of all dog attacks on carriers.
TDCI says reports of dog bites continue to increase each year. In 2015 there were 15,352 claims, a number which rose to 18,000 in 2016.
